Maintenance service at dealer or local repair shops?
Q. I have Honda Accord 95 with 136K miles on it. It is running good so far. I am planning to keep the car for the next 2-3 years at least. I would like to do scheduled maintenance service and replacement of timing belt. My question is whether to do it at Honda dealer or local repair shops? Quote from dealer costs around $1000 for both.

A. If you can find a reputable indie shop, go there. Friends or family recommendations are a great way to find one. Ask AAA or BBB to recommend some to you. Go online and see what shops are close to you and if they have AAA or BBB approval. And just as important, make sure they employ only ASE certified mechanics. They have to go through just as many tests as a Honda certified mechanic. An indie shop will cost you less than a Honda dealer. Their labor rates are lower since they have lower overhead. And they use high quality aftermarket parts on older cars, saving you a lot over Honda OEM parts. Not all indie shops are rip offs. Car Maintenance/Repair Costs, What's Fair?
Q. I live in Chicago and need my Honday repaired. I do not want to get ripped off on maintenance/repair costs, and want to know if anyone has knowledge of an honest repair man to the job? Please advise, this would help me out greatly!
