A metal is a chemical element that is a good conductor of both electricity and heat and forms cations and ionic bonds with non-metals. In chemistry, a metal (Ancient Greek métallon, μέταλλον) is an element, compound, or alloy characterized by high electrical conductivity. In a metal, atoms readily lose electrons to form positive ions (cations). Those ions are surrounded by delocalized electrons, which are responsible for the conductivity. The solid thus produced is held by electrostatic interactions between the ions and the electron cloud, which are called metallic bonds. Usage in astronomy is quite different, see below. Q. I know it's used to harden metals, but what are the practical applications of such metals parts? please,as much explanations and examples as you can. Thanks Asked by Ulquorria Schiffer - Wed May 28 07:23:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It will make them stiffer but at the cost of making it more brittle. The best example is steel, if one is to add more carbon into steel when processing it it becomes much stiffer, tensile, and ductile. I am not explaining what tensile or ductile mean as I believe knowledge is best found by yourself. (just look on a dictionary FCS) I knew this answer already but a quick wikipedia search could help you in the future from relying on others. Answered by KUNDI - Sun Feb 22 05:05:03 2009 What are some common applications of metals?
Q. Also, for every application, what properties of that metal make it suitable for that particular use? And where can these metals be found? As in, what are their sources? In addition, what are some problems encountered in using metals, and what are the solutions to these problems? Asked by Chestnuts - Thu Mar 27 05:17:41 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. They can be used for making electrodes (DUCTILITY) EX - copper they can be hammered into thin sheets/PLATES (Malleability) EX - iron they can be used for making jewellery ( they show lusture) EX - gold these can be found naturally in mines. metals have high melting and boiling points, so it is difficult to use them for experiments. adding of other substances to them reduces their melting/Boiling point. EX - a white powder is added to gold to reduce its melting point. metals are strong. so they are ideal for locomotives. but due to their high density, it is difficult for locomotives made from metals to move at very high speeds. use of alluminium can solve this problem.
