Any ideas on how to repair a surfboard at home?
Q. Does anyone know any possible way to repair a surfboard other then taking it in to a shop. The board has some minor puncture marks to it and I'm afraid it will take on water if I take it out. Is there any apoxy or glue or any home repairs I can try? I realize there is a fiberglass overlay, I just can't afford to have it professionally repaired at this time.

Where can I get instructions on old home repair?
Q. I am very capable but this home is very old. They are pre-dry wall. There are holes in the roof and leaks everywhere. I don't need a contractor as much as I need clear instructions. I mean it is not raining in the living room, but I think they have neglected it too long. There may be structural damage. Especially to the roof. Most contractor's only cover the roof and so far few actually repair the roof. I live in the Philadelphia metro area which includes New Jersey and Delaware.

A. Sounds like one dangerous roof to walk on! Don't do it! Call a roofing company. They're all capable of full repair. You'll want it stripped so that all rot is exposed and then replaced... and the new roof lays well. When it comes to shingles, there are different weights that last varying numbers of years...get the heavy weights! Otherwise, you'll be reroofing in 16 years. Labor is the same for light or heavy.

How difficult is it to do a home repair on a head gasket for a car, specifically an SUV or a Van?
Q. Looking to buy a used car and see alot of them with Head Gasket problem's. They say its a cheap repair usually running under 100$ but I was wondering how much labor it is to do it. Will do at home if its easy enough, my dad know's a lot about cars and says it's hard and not worth it but I have a feeling he's being lazy.

A. He is not being lazy it is hard to do not as bad on an suv as it would be a van the best advice I can give you is get a vehicle specific repair manual and follow what it says.Is it worth it? that all depends on a few things such as having the right tools and knowing how to do it if and having the time. If you have the tools know how and time and you can find one cheap that just needs a head gasket get you a book and go for it you can save a bundle by doing it yourself

What are the things that are easy enough for the average person to do? And what are the things that are probably too hard or risky for the avg person to do?

where online can you run a home repair license number?
Q. if you want to hire someone to repair your home and their license # appears in their ad, how can u check it to see if they are legal or have any judgements against them?
Asked by kimber - Tue Oct 24 22:53:14 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Unlikely that a state or local government licenses handyman services, i.e., through examination or otherwise determines a minimal level of competence. Usually the "license" is simply an occupational registration, a device for raising local govt revenues. Contact the local government office which issues occupational and business registration certificates. To determine whether the repairman is licensed as a building contractor (residential or commercial) call the local government building permit/inspection department both to determine whether the repairman's name is known there (if the person is capable of pulling a building permit), as well as to determine if the license number is of a type which is issued by state or local goverenment. … [cont.]

British Gas Home Repair - how soon can I call somebody out?
Q. Save me some time searching the FAQ - how long after starting British Gas home repair can I call somebody out to fix a fault in my boiler - PS Ive not opted for BG yet - Im looking to get that then call them out immediately.. are there other better companies?

A. You should be able to call them right away, you can with the company I work for, they guarantee a visit within 2 hours, don't think bg do though, and keep your eyes open for the commission paid engineer trying to get more money out of you, you would have been wise to shop around instead of just going for british gas. P.S. No company will take you on if the boiler is already broke down, they will usually check the system first, or give a 14 day cooling off period.

What makes you choose one home repair person over another?
Q. Like plumbers, heating and air conditioning repair, appliance repair, etc? How do you find the one you want? Where do you look, or who do you talk to?

A. It's almost like choosing a family doctor. You want one who is licensed, bonded, insured. These features should automatically separate good from bad repair persons, but not always. Good character can be hard to spot at first glance. When you choose your repair person, choose one who specializes within the scope of your particular need. For instance...you may need electrical fixed, don't choose a cheap labor/repair person who also fixes fences, walks your dog, and paints a little on the side. Search the Better Business Bureau for information on the licensed business you are interested in. Word of mouth does work best, but even then you can find the "Bad Apple" in the midst of a good referral. I change Doctors when I'm not satisfied with… [cont.]

A. Rent paid for a personal residence, regardless of whether one lives in a relative's home, is generally not deductible. The same would apply if you were renting your own personal residence. This would include any "value" attributed to work done on the property in lieu of, or in addition to, rent. One possible exception, which doesn't sound like it applies, might be a deduction for a portion of the rent (including additional costs if they don't exceed the rent), IF you maintain an office in that home for your own business purposes. The rules for deducting Office in Home expenses are stringent, and I don't advise trying to dream up a business purpose where one does not exist. Is it possible to get a grant for home repair?
Q. I had to have a plumbing co. come out to fix a back problem but come to find out the problem isn't located on my property. It starts where the line goes under the "city owned" street and comes back up to attach to the sewer lines. my house was built in 1970 and I think was one of the first few in the neighborhood.

A. Check your city, county, and state websites, there are grants available for homeowners. In this particular case, you need to get the city involoved to repair the problem. Building codes were relaxed in the 1970s and 1980s and alot of "corners were cut" that are causing problems today.

Home repair warranty is it worth it?
Q. I have a old rebublic home warranty that was included when i originally purchased my home. It is about to expire in march and there asking $300 to extend it another year with a $100 per call service charge. Is it advantage to me to purchase the warranty or just put that money ito an emergency fund?
Asked by bigdogcush - Tue Feb 20 20:40:20 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'd go w/the warranty. I know it sounds like a lot on the service call, but if they were to come back after getting parts there would be no more fee to be paid. As long as whatever it is...plumbing or A/C...isn't neglected the home warranty will cover repairs. Make sure you keep your coil cleaned, that is the first thing that a HVAC looks at when they're called out. If it's dirty, it puts you in denial and you're stuck w/paying to clean it and all the repairs...that can get costly!

emergency home repair tax write off?
Q. I recieved a notice of unsafe condition from the city on my property. Can I write off any expenses to repair the retaining wall in question? What if the retaining wall was damaged during a declared state of emergency?
Asked by qbert - Sun Sep 9 15:05:57 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This would not be a deduction if it is your personal residence. It could be an adjustment to your basis if you own the home. That will reduce any gain you may make when you sell the house in the future. It is not an adjustment to bases if it is only a repair to what had existed when you purchased the house.

Q. I recieved a notice of unsafe condition from the city on my property. Can I write off any expenses to repair the retaining wall in question? What if the retaining wall was damaged during a declared state of emergency?

A. This would not be a deduction if it is your personal residence. It could be an adjustment to your basis if you own the home. What is the best home repair manual?
Q. I am suddenly the man of the house and as such it usually comes to me to fix holes in drywall, clogged sinks, broken fans etc. Usually I just go online and read through a few examples of how to handle these problems, but I was hoping someone could recommend a book that describes the general workings of a house, and how to make the best and longest lasting repairs (I like to get things done right the first time). Thanks!

A. I always was partial to Readers Digest repair manuals. They're well written with excellent pictures and diagrams.
