What year was the kenmore stylist 86 model 605 made and approximately how much is it worth?
Q. My grandmother passed away recently and in cleaning her garage we found a kenmore stylist 86 model 605 sewing machine. We don't know how old it is. Or if it is worth anything. We also don't have an instruction manual for it. So if anyone can give any help, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

A. Sad to say most mid to late 20th century sewing machines are worth little other than sentimental value. After years in a garage it might have corrosion or rust issues, also the grease and lubrication might have solidified, and the belts have dried and weakened so it might not even run. Without an instruction book it's very difficult to thread and operate properly. Find someone who knows about sewing machines, is willing to fix it or spend money to fix it and who is willing to find an instruction book -and let them have it for nothing. Kenmores are very common, Sears sold thousand of these over the years. If it's one of the Stylists in a wood cabinet then the cabinet might be more desirable and sellable than the the machine in the… [cont.]

A. Here is how to handle this. Go to www.repairclinic.com Fill in the information about your machine machine. The site will walk you through the symptoms. The site will explain what parts you need and sell them to you cheaply as anywhere that I know of. It will walk you through how to repair the problem. I have used this site many times and it is the best!

How do you replace the circulating fan in a Kenmore refrigerator w/the freezer on the bottom?
Q. I have a Kenmore refrigerator with freezer on the bottom and the freezer is working but the top part is warm. Someone came out and said it was probably the circulation fan and we could fix it ourselves. But, he didn't tell us where it was located or how to access it or how to replace it. He just said I could find the information online.. So, I need to know how to replace it etc from start to finish. Any help would be appreciated.

A. Partselect.com usually has the refrigerator diagrams, with replacements fans for sale-- they carry most large names and their variations, along with the full fridge diagrams-- if newer. Doubt they carry older brands/models. However, when my fridge started leaking, had a guy come over, and he tried fixing and messed things up more. So, we let the fridge go, and bought a new one from sears, with the blue crew warranty. Anything goes wrong now, they come and fix it for free. Saves everyone the headache. You may want to call Sears, and have them come check it out, but expect to pay $250 for the visit and the fix--no matter how simple. Private guys are 50/50... you need to ask friends for whom the recommend in your area. Good luck!

How do I tighten the bobbin on an old Kenmore?
Q. I have an old Kenmore 158 series (that I love), but I have no manual and not sure how to tighten the bobbin. I know it's loose because the thread under the fabric is loopy. Any help is appreciated!

A. Actually, if the thread on the bottom side is "loopy" that indicates a tension problem on the TOP tension disks, not the bobbin. In fact, adjusting your bobbin could make the problem worse. Without the manual, you're trying to fix something flying blind, but here are some things you can try. Remember, all adjustment you make should be in small increments. Before you start adjusting your tension, make these checks. This is very important, even though it might seem basic. 1. Be certain your machine is threaded properly. Even folks with lots of experience can miss a thread guide. Unthread and rethread it with a fresh spool. Seriously. 2. Be sure your bobbin is properly inserted. Take it out, look it over. Is the bobbin wound evenly? Look… [cont.]

How do you fix an ice crusher/ dispenser in a Kenmore fridge?
Q. I have a Kenmore Elite side by side fridge. It is a year old and just went out of warranty a month ago. Tonight the ice dispenser quit working. It makes a noise like it is going to crush and/or dispense, then it sounds like the motor gives out. I know I can have a repairman come and fix it, but am curious if it is an easy and inexpensive problem to fix.
Asked by Supergal - Mon Mar 10 22:08:29 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Have you removed the ice bin and made sure there isn't a block of ice jammed in the mechanism? Sometimes, if you open the freezer door frequently, condensation will form on the cubes and fuse them together. You may have to clean out the old ice and start over.

how much should i sell my kenmore washer and dryer for?
Q. I bought both of them about 4 years ago. They're both in great working condition, still looks rather new, and have never been repaired. I can't even recall how much i paid for them. I called up Kenmore, and they suggested about 600 together, and told me that model numbers don't really mean much; they were just giving me reasonable estimates to sell them for. Any suggestions on whether this would be a fair price?
Asked by dudnaito - Fri Nov 23 14:54:51 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Call a second hand appliance store with your model number brand and the age of the machines as if you were purchasing them. They will tell you what they are selling them for. Despite what you were told, people do look at the features and what the machines will and won't do. Looking in our classified ads most of the machines range in the 150-250 for machines that are less than 5 years old. That being said I sold my maytags for $200 each and they were top of the line. But that was still $50 below what the second hand appliance store was selling the same machines for.

Could anyone tell me why my Kenmore washer does not drain though it spins?
Q. My Kenmore washer does not drain. I suspect clogging in or near the water pump or broken belt. Would that be a reasonable guess? If so, how can check them or fix them?
Asked by james - Tue Mar 11 05:49:12 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you can get to the outlet pump at the bottom you will find the outlet pipe attached to the pump with a spring clamp. You will need a pair of pliers to release the spring then pull the pipe off and check for blockage by pushing a bent coat hanger up it until it exits at the sink end. If it's clear of debris then check confines of the pump for debris or malfunction.

How to thread a old sears kenmore sewing machine?
Q. I found a old sears kenmore sewing machine at a thrift store for $10 that works, but didn't come with any instructions on how to thread the machine. A. Lift the machine itself out of the table. Look on the lower front for a metal plate with a model number. Then go to and under "Sewing machine manuals and Related items", look for your model. It should be "starts with Kenmore". You can order a manual from there. ***OR*** If you don't want to spend the money, here is the basic idea of threading a machine. Place the thread on the little pole on top of the machine. Thread it through any loops nearby, back to front (usually two slots or loops). Then take it through the tensioner (usually a dial of some sort that squishes two metal plates together). Make sure the thread goes *between* the plates. Then take it up to the "goose" which is the arm that sticks out and goes up and down… [cont.]

A. Just look for the lowest part and may be under a little cover. Usually stops up every few years. It should not be a plug but just a hole with a line that runs down by the pan near the compressor to evaporate this water. rd

If they can't help then there *IS* no solution! Good Luck!

How to test defrost heater in Kenmore fridge?
Q. I have a kenmore (Amana ) fridge. There was frost building on the evaporator coils and cooling was hendered. I cleaned the condenser coils (as best I could) and changed out the defrost thermostat because it appeared to have burst. It works for a few weeks and then freezer side freezes up again. I now suspect that the defrost thermostat is bad and wanted to know how if it can be tested. Thnx.

A. Put your ear down by the timer and see if you can hear it advance, or use a marker to mark location and see if it advances. Next after your prove it advances rotate into defrost (compressor shuts off) and check amp draw on the normally open set of contacts (defrost) if you dont have amp draw check for voltage if voltage and no amp draw you probably have an open heater, check continuity on heater and if it reads open then your heater is bad. Remember in checking voltage you will read zero volts across a switch that is closed. Checking voltage to ground doesn't prove anything in testing, you have to check across the line.

How far of a walk from Kenmore to Fenway?
Q. I am going to fenway in about a week with my family and have never taken the T to the park before. I don't want my grandparents to walk too far, so I was wondering about how far the Kenmore stop off the T is from fenway park. If it's too far, I'm thinking about just driving in, despite the traffic. Answers are greatly appreciated!
