phones that will work on a US and European cell phone network?
Q. I'm moving to Italy and sadly (tear tear) my new phone, the Samsung Moment won't work there. Atleast from what my parents say. So I'll get a new phone there and I want to get one that can be used on a US cell phone network (ex Sprint or Verison) when I move back. So what phones that can be used in Europe and the US?

How does the phone companies know you are using a Motorola Red phone?
Q. Phone companies in the UK promise to donate 5% of your monthly bill for calls made from a Motorola Red phone, using any SIM card. How do phone companies know you are using this phone?
Asked by theoracle - Mon Jun 12 17:21:23 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They can tell the IMEI number of any phone you use with your SIM Card. The first 6 digits tell them the model number and the rest identify the specific phone you are using. This makes it fairly simple for them to create a list of calls made from a specific type of phone. This may seem like a waste of their resources to track the type of phone used for each call, but it is very useful in tracking the life of phones. This information can then be used in making decisions about upgrade programs, warranties, and marketing new models.

A. Do you report the problem to her land line Telco and your Cell Phone provider? There are a number of problems that could cause this to happen but if they are not reported to the providers then they will not be fixed. One way to report the problem is to call the Operator from the land line and tell the Operator that your calls do not connect and ask the Operator to complete the call for her. Is it only from your Girlfriend or do other land line people report the problem? You do have to remember that she may receive ringing in her ear before your cell phone rings. That is because the gateway for your cell service may indicate that you are available and then there may not be available bandwidth to connect to you so you will not get a… [cont.]

How do I activate a new phone on my current cell contract?
Q. I am looking at upgrading the cell phone to a Blackberry. If I purchase the phone somewhere else besides my cell phone carrier store, how do I add the phone to the plan? I would like to stop using my old phone and use the new Blackberry instead and simply use the same phone number. How do I change phones?
Asked by eziegelbein - Thu Mar 15 21:49:04 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should just be able to take the phone to the carrier and have them activate it for you. But their could be some issues with software. Because your carrier may sell their Blackberry's with their software.

What cell phone can you actually hear someone on?
Q. I currently have a Nokia 6102 (Cingular). I like the features of the phone: color display, IR so I can upload my own pics and ringtones, good battery, ok camera, very customizable. The problem is, I cannot HEAR anyone when they talk! I have the phone turned up to max volume and if I don't have it positioned just right on my ear, I can't hear half of what someone says. I'm really not interested in an earpiece, I don't care about bluetooth (one more thing for me to lose), I would just like a phone that I can talk on. Does anyone have a suggestion as to the best phone you can actually hear on that has some of, or all of the above features? I don't need or want anything extravagant, just something that works.
Asked by Samantha K - Thu May 31 01:24:23 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You have quite a piece of equipment, if it does all that :) My opinion is a phone should be a phone, but-- Turn down the volume, you have it way too high. The problem might very well be a defective mic in the handset. Not sure what kind of warranty Cingular has, but a manufacturer has one year, it sounds (pardon the pun) like a manufacturer defect in the mic to me, take it to the store, Good luck, Linda

How can I plug a regular phone into my cell phone?
Q. I'm in love with the idea of those Hulger handsets--they look like cool retro phones and plug straight into your cell phone. I have a Blackberry Pearl and it has a mini-USB jack. Is there any sort of mini-USB to phone jack converter that I could use so I can use the phones I have in my house? This would be so nice since it would be more comfortable and would reduce my exposure to cell phone radiation. I guess I'll get a Novophone. Much less expensive than a Hulger.

Why is my phone number needed for the doorbell to ring upstairs?
Q. I am moving into a new building, and was recently informed that all tenants must provide their phone numbers to have an active doorbell. I've never heard of this before? But then I've always lived in older buildings. Can someone explain how this works, and why management offices are doing this? What happens if your phone service is disconnected for non-payment and turned back on? Will management have to reprogram everything again? Does this mean the bell doesn't ring at all? Only the phone? Does this mean all visitors must have my phone number? I don't give all my relatives my home number? lol Also, when someone rings the bell, will caller ID let me know whether it's the door or a call? Sometimes all this high tech stuff just takes away… [cont.]

What others ways can a phone company test your phone for misuse to void the warranty beside the water test?
Q. I just bought a phone for Christmas and the touchscreen is showing different colors. However, my phone was placed by my laptop which had blown hot air from its fan. Is it possible that my phone company can detect that my phone was damage by heat or any other things to void my warranty?

A. Sure. The warranty only covers manufacturer's defects. Those are a lot different than heat damage from an external source.

How to break a cell phone contract?
Q. I have alltel and I am happy with the service but my needs for phones have changed and I would like to upgrade to newer/data phone like a blackberry but I can't because I am under contract. I have two phones that are under contract with alltel, is there a way to break these contracts without paying the rediculous fees they have?

A. No, sorry, you would have to pay the $200 termination fee per contract to cancel. The HTC Touch Pro from Alltel also has a full Qwerty Keyboard and is a Smart Phone also. Take a look at this overview:

A. If by Spanish u mean Spain, then skype.com charges 0.253 to mobiles and it was the cheapest i could find. If this is some form of personal relationship then the best option would be skype-to-skype, which is free.

What is the difference between a smart phone and a regular phone?

A. A smart phone is usually a PDA phone that has many functions such as a Blackberry, Iphone, Instinct and others. Some have windows mobile and others have there own proprietary OS. Regular phones do internet and stuff but smart phones do it better and you can add applications to smart phones where it is harder to do to a regular phone.

What is a good unlocked GSM phone to be used solely overseas?
Q. I currently have Alltel and Nextel services. However, unfortunately, Alltel operates on CDMA network and Nextel operates on IDEN network which is almost unheard of overseas. I am planning to work, study, and travel to Europe and South America in the course of the summer. I need an unlocked GSM phone with a prepaid SIM card, but that's all I know. I understand Alltel currently have no world phone, and Nextel has the i930 as it only marketed world phone but I cannot afford to cough up another $400.00 for the phone because I spent enough as is with travel and all. So, please advise me on the proper venue as I'm quite oblivious. I know Cingular and T-Mobile operates on GSM network but I cannot contract myself to another mobile phone… [cont.]
