Is a regular plug (that goes into an electrical socket) compatible with the wires in a ceiling box?
Q. I bought a hanging light fixture that has a 2-prong plug (not grounded) on it, instead of bare wires like most chandeliers have. Can I just cut the plug off of this cord and attach it to the wires in the ceiling box where the old light fixture is? Help! Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks! It is a very lightweight fixture, shouldn't be a problem.

A. Yes, in this case it sounds like you can. To do it properly, you need to get similar mounting hardware that is used to mount a chandelier, which is a canopy, box bracket, and ring. These are needed to support the weight of your fixture. The chain of your fixture should be attached to the ring by opening a link and attaching it through the ring and closing it back up. The fixture is now ready to install. To do the wiring, cut the fixture cord to have about 8" of wire past where it goes through the canopy. If your fixture wire is similar to lamp cord (2 clear, white or brown colored wires molded into a ribbon) You need to separate them at the webbing between the wires about 6" back from the end. Then carefully strip 1/2" of insulation… [cont.]

A. I'm guessing that other than a liability concern, there just isn't enough consumer demand for such an accessory.

Every time i plug my guitar pedals in a regular 9V adapter, my amp makes a humming noise and theres no sound?
Q. I have a 80 Watt Peavy Back Stage amp, and every time i plug a regular 9V adapter into my dunlop cry baby wah wah pedal or any of my other pedals, it makes a humming noise and no sound at all. I have tried different adapters and no luck. any help?
Asked by GuitarKid - Fri Oct 24 11:46:43 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Look carefully at the adapter, does it say the out put is DC or AC? Look at where the adapter plugs into the unit. Does it show which side is plus and which is minus? The humming can be caused by a bad filter on the adapter. Not having the unit before me I don't know if it needs DC or AC. But amps work off of DC so there would be a rectifier bridge in there if the power source was AC, so a DC adapter would work. But if the unit was designed for DC then there is no way the AC adapter would work.

Is the fire from a platinum spark plug REALLY hotter than a regular plug?
Q. I know that platinum plugs last longer but do they actually produce a HOTTER spark. Also, I bought a set of Autolite's that have the platinum electrode "without" the little platinum pad on the underside of the grounding tang...will they produce the SAME temprature of spark as plugs that DO have the platinum pad. Thanks very much for any help!!! GLH
Asked by glh - Tue May 26 02:41:01 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Spark plugs are not for "producing heat." It's the spark that ignites the fuel, not heat. When heat ignites your fuel you will get pre-ignition and subsequent engine damage. Before you spend a lot of money on plugs do some thorough online research. The e3 plugs don't appear to be any better than any other, according to the many comments I've read. Coating the electrode(s) with platinum only serves to reduce electrode wear due to erosion. Different engines respond differently to different plugs. All you can do is try various plugs until you come up with a brand your engine likes. I've had excellent results with Autolite in my cars (mostly Fords) and motorcycles. I've had poor results with NGK and Nippon Denso (they both come from the… [cont.]

I want to wire a security light to a regular light plug. How do I do this?
Q. I have a Designers Edge L-1820 150W HPS "Dusk till Dawn" security light. Out of the box, I thought I could plug it into the wall, but it just has a bare white and bare black wire. Can I wire it to a standard wall plug so I can just plug it in? If so, how?

A. Your new light fixture is intended to replace an existing wall mounted light fixture. The correct way to mount it would be to install a junction box where you want the light and run power to it. This would be pretty cheezy, but you could attach a junction box to the wall surface, and then mount the light to that. Use a watertight fixture box, and run conduit from it down to near the receptacle you'll connect to. At the bottom of the conduit, attach another junction box. Run a black, white and ground 12ga THHN conductor from the light down to the lower junction box. At the lower junction box, wire in an "extension cord" (SJ cable, like Mark said, or canabalize a good, heavy duty exterior extension cord. Run the extension cord out the… [cont.]

Q. What happens when you plug regular batteries into a deck phone that works with rechargeable batteries?
Asked by ns - Wed Aug 29 06:29:31 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Firstly the phone will work fine. Then when you put it on the charging cradle, it will attempt to recharge the non-rechargable batteries. They tend to heat up fairly fast, can cause a fire, and may actually explode, damaging your phone or even you. Not advisable.

A. Buy an inverter. All electronic stores have them, as does Walmart. There are several sizes, so make sure you get one rated at enough Watts to do what you need to do.

How can I plug a regular phone into my cell phone?
Q. I'm in love with the idea of those Hulger handsets--they look like cool retro phones and plug straight into your cell phone. I have a Blackberry Pearl and it has a mini-USB jack. Is there any sort of mini-USB to phone jack converter that I could use so I can use the phones I have in my house? This would be so nice since it would be more comfortable and would reduce my exposure to cell phone radiation. I guess I'll get a Novophone. Much less expensive than a Hulger.

Can regular camcorders plug into iMovie?
Q. I have a JVC camcorder that isn't made anymore, but I was wondering that since you can plug cellphones and other things into a Mac computer, can I hook a wire to the camera and put my videos into iMovie? Thanks.
Asked by Harry - Sun Feb 7 21:42:25 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You didn't tell us which Mac, which version OSX or which version iMovie. You also didn't tell us which model JVC camcorder - JVC makes or has made VHS-C, MiniDV tape, hard disc drive, flash memory and several others. If you don't have the model number, please at least tell us what type of storage media it uses. (And "little tapes" - if that's what it uses - is not enough detail.) "a Mac computer" and "regular camcorder" does not help much. If the camcorder is analog or is one of the early miniDV tape camcorders with a JLIP interface, you will need to get an analog/digital converter. The best ones connect to the computer using firewire. Canopus makes the ADVC55. BUT, if your Mac has no firewire port (like some of the MacBooks), then this… [cont.]

Q. I am curouse to know peoples opinion on this question. Maybe with your experiences. Also dose it always have a pink color?
Asked by Tori - Sat Feb 17 11:22:42 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's a LOT more than regular discharge. It looks like a GIANT wad of snot. Really gross, I know, but it's true. Some people lose it in chunks, and others lose it all at once. With my daughter, I lost it all at once, and it was just a lot and fist-sized and gross. With my son (38 weeks now) I lost it in chunks over about 12 hours or so and it was a little bloody. It's different for each person and each pregnancy.

Is it cheaper to use Gas heat(wall heater) or to use an electrical heater that you plug in a regular outlet.?
Q. I have gas heat but its 80 dollars to connect it and the electrical heater (radiator style) I plug in does a ok job for now. I'm just wondering will my electric bill be super high.
Asked by CRITTER - Mon Oct 23 14:46:56 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Gas is cheaper to run per BTU (british thermal units) than electricity for heating (given current market costs). However, the initial start up costs for gas are higher. Over time you will spend more money for that electric wall heater than for getting a gas one connected. Shut it off, go outside and look at your meter, note how fast it spins. Turn it on, and look at your meter again, you will see what I mean.
