How do you repair and repait rust damage on a car?
Q. I have a red tracker and would like to repair rust damage on it. What products should I use? The damages are not huge. It's just little nichs here and there. But I notice they are rusting. I would like to even it out with the rest of the car in color(red) and stop further rusting. What are you opinions?

A. Other answer is fine, but take your time when picking out your spray paint. Rustoleum paint has some product lines specifically for automotive/metal, and some products that can go directly on rusty surfaces. This will make the job easier. You still should try with a wire brush or sandpaper to try to get as much of the loose rust off though and still read through and follow the prep instructions on the spraycan though.

If it's a minor rust spot I'd sand it down to the metal with a very fine grade of sand paper , then I'd use spray a bit of primer on it and then let it dry so you can spray paint it with the factory colour."Note"Just say the rust was on the hood at the on its edge at front of your vehicle. How can I repair minor damage to my car?
Q. I scraped a brown fence in my white car. There is a little dent that I'm not too concerned about. Mostly, I would like to know how to safely remove the brown paint from my car and seal up the few little scratches so that they won't rust in the future. Any suggestions?

Rust on my 9 mm! I haven't used my 9 mm in ages so now how do I get rid of the rust?

A. first off, think where the rust may have come from, it could be burnt powder residue from the last time it was fired and never cleaned. Though the residue is simple to wipe off when fresh, but when left untouched for a while it can harden and be very stubborn and rust the gun. i would simply recommend a bristle bore brush for the 9 mm barrel size, and some gun barrel cleaning solvent. all is readily available in a simple outdoor store, or even wal-mart, in a convenient all in one gun cleaning kit or individually. a basic gun clean should get it off. if its hard try soaking the rust with the bore cleaner solution for a bit to work it self into the rust and weaken it. it may not all break loose on the first shot so keep passing the bristle… [cont.]

Thanks. Thanks Jamand and wildmanny2 for tech info. As for the repair work spraying... I've bought 100 of materials and done my research in that dept and hoping to make an ok-ish job of it. car frame repair for a full size cadillac?
Q. I would like to know if it is worth the effort to repair frame damage to a 1992 cadillac brougham. the rust is located to the left and right of the gas tank.
Asked by shannon - Sat May 22 15:44:57 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. that depends on the owner, if it is a car you are considering buying, it better be cheaper than dirt, those 90s cadillacs were not the best cars ever built so my advice, if you do not own one now, then don't buy this one, there are a fair number of questions on yahoo answers about the 90s Cadillacs with electrical problems, which goes along with what my Friend went through, we were driving near mount hood, and a snow storm popped up, we could not get the windows to roll up. then, after we drove like hell out of the storm, and it was nice, the windows worked fine

Do i have to accept an insurance companies offer on?
Q. I was hit while driving my car the guy who hit me was cited for being left of center .His insurance company said that my vehicle is totaled. The frame is not bent the car still runs it was in excellent mechanical shape got great gas mileage and has some rust on it.The insurance is saying because of the rust damage and high mileage that it is considered totaled.Do i have to accept their offer for payment or can I force them to repair my vehicle ?

A. If you want to challenge their offer you have every right ,but you need to support your argument with facts," I'm not happy about the offer." isn't good enough. I'd say a first step would be to go to the most expensive used car lots in your area and get quotes on the same car and see how they compare to the offer. For a few hundred dollars you can hire an independent insurance adjuster. These guys challenge insurance companies for a living and know how to do it right. An example from personal experience: I had a custom motorcycle stolen, the insurance company offered me $10,000 for it ,I fought it for months to no avail. I finally hired an independent adjuster and in less than a month I got $18,500. It was certainly worth the $350 fee.

Should I repair a car I am going to trade in or just accept a lower value?
Q. It is an '02 Dodge Stratus, runs good, but there is a small ding on the hood and side plus my car door creaks when it opens. Also, small rust spot on wheel well. All this was caused by a lady backing up into me in the drivethru at KFC last year (who does that???) At the time, I did not see the damage and she took off. Too late to turn it in to insurance. Keep in mind -- my finances are not great.

A. If this is a forced air furnace; I'll tell you a secret ...Furnace heat exchanger is probably still under warranty. Problem is that its a major job to replace because most of the time the furnace has to be pulled, completely disassembled, and then put back in place. The contractor is going to make his money either way and its going to be most of the cost of a new one anyway when you take all things into consideration. You will spend all that money and still have a 12 year old piece of equipment that has no warranty on any parts other than the heat exchanger. When you consider that a call to repair any other part is going to be several hundred by the time its done, sometimes its just good economics to replace it when you can buy a standard… [cont.]

Is it necessary to repaint the keel of a beneteau when you run aground?
Q. The boat hit and got stuck on a sandbank and I'm sure it knocked some paint off and did a bit of damage. What happens if you don't repair it, does it rust? I've no idea what it's made from. Do you think it will have to be taken out of the dock, as this costs 100 and that's a lot.
Asked by Glorious - Mon May 5 18:50:09 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's a very good idea to do it. In the long run you'll probably spend a lot more if you don't deal with it. It's a fiberglass boat and you definitely want to at least have someone qualified to see if you did any damage to the glass. Once the gel coat is compromised and the glass is exposed you have to deal with it. If you crushed the glass, you have to deal with it. You do not want to allow salt water to infiltrate the glass. It can travel very far away from the point of impact and create some problems that can cost a fortune to fix. Spend a little now to save a lot later. Sorry, but I've seen this way too many times.

Thinking about buying a new car with hail damage how much should they take off?
Q. Its a Honda Accord and it has quite a bit of hail damage. How much should I expect them to take off and how much should I ask for? It is priced at 28,000 without the hail damage taken into account. also will hail damage eventually rust? How much does it cost for the paintless dent repair? I have a cousin that does body repair I want to know how much to offer him to fix it? I may not have it fixed I can't afford the 28,000 for the ones that aren't damaged I don't want to be a sucker though and buy a car that isn't worh as much as I paid because of the damage 28000 is for a not damaged one I want to know how much to ask for the damaged one, I wouldn't ask about it if I wouldn't want to drive it. A. Most insurance companies write off hail damaged cars, its a huge repair to most flat panels, there insurance would have already paid them for the damage, so they will sell it for the difference, the rest is profit. I recently done one in Australia and charged $3700, and I didn't get every little dent. $15000 sounds fair, but I bet they are expecting $25000

OK, I am not asking for your opinion on… [cont.]

Am I stuck with this P.O.S. or it the seller liable for the damage?
Q. I live in Abilene TX, and about four months ago I purchased a 1999 Ford Taurus from Abilene Used Car Sales , the car did include a limited 30-day warranty by the second week the car was having major transmission problems, i took it back and the manager drove it and said that he didn't see anything wrong with it. So I just left it alone , just last week the cars transmission stalled and the car overheated I pulled over over immediately called the car lot and they towed it in for repairs , so they ended up fixing the a/c , transmission & a corroded freeze plug, i payed 125$ down on the repair fees and agreed to pay the rest out. Within twenty minutes of me driving it the temp gauge went all the way up and the engine started knocking i pulled… [cont.]

A. Is the title for this car clean? This car sounds like a Katrina Flood victim. I'm just speculating but if there is that much rust around the engine this car had to be submerged. I'd be asking some questions about the title to see it has a salvage title or a repaired title (use to be salvage but is now showing clean). I think you got screwed and if this is the case you can sue.

Car Insurance Refuses to Pay for Salt Water Flood Damage?
Q. I got caught in an unusual tidal surge (streets flooded up to curb level) in late September. I was 1 1/2 miles away from the ocean, but water I later learned came up through the storm drainage system (It was raining so we thought it was fresh water). Four months later I discover during routine maintenance that car is a total loss due to undercarriage rust. Insurance company says salt water damage is not covered under comprehensive because it is not "direct" damage but a "chemical process." Also say a "prudent person" should have known the water was salty or brackish and had it cleaned immediately. Repair shop says it would have been impossible to clean even if I had brought it in that day. What should I do?

Damaged a friends car. The total value of the car is $150.Damage costs are $1000.Will it be a write off?
Q. I accidently backed into my friends car when it was parked in my drive way. I hit the back corner bumper and misplaced the bumper and left a dint in it. Now the problem is that I originally sold the car (that I hit) to my friend for $150.It is an old Datsun Stanza and in poor condition. He didnt spend too much getting it ready for rego. The quote for repairs is over $1000 because there is a huge amount of rust in the boot. If they try and bang out the dint the whole boot is likely to collapse. The car is so rusty I doubt it will pass rego this year. If it wasnt for the rust the quote would be much less. If I go to my third party insurer Im concerned they will consider the car a write-off as the damage far exceeds the value of the car. Any… [cont.]

A. The Insurance company will want three quotes, and if the bill is bigger than the agreed value of the car then, yes, they will declare the vehicle a write off, Get some body filler and fix it yourself, won't cost that much.
