How much does it cost to repair rust damage on a car?
Q. There is some rust on the rear rocker panels on a car I'm looking to buy (Ford Escort Wagon). Can anyone estimate how much it will be to get fixed?

how can i repair sum serious rust damage around my windshield? literally no metal in certain spots.?
Q. the car is a 65 mustang, and the auto shops wanted my arm in return for the work so i was hoping i could manage to do it myself. i was wondering if i should weld in new metal or use some kind of filler. i would like it to last for years to come not just a year and a day.

A. Well, as I'm sure you know, the windshield and seal certainly has to come out if you want any kind of decent repair. Once you can thoroughly access all of the rusted areas, you'll have to pull back any trim from the interior in the areas to be repaired. Mask out the windshield opening if you want to keep the final clean up to a minimum. The next step is to grind away all of the rust all of the way into the clean metal and grind the paint off down to the metal for about a three inch area from all of the edges you've ground away. Now you're ready for the fun part. You will have to cut, shape and secure new metal into place and weld it. Clean it up, fill as necessary, sand it smooth and rustproof it. I would then paint it, but others might… [cont.]

Is rust damage on a car really that bad?
Q. I'm looking to buy a used car and I have heard that if you find one with rust damage espescially under the tire area is really bad. I was wondering if this was true and if so why is rust damage so bad? I always thought it could be repaired? He also metioned that this has to do with cars that are from the midwest??
Asked by SEF25 - Sun Aug 16 15:46:37 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. nobody so far addressed the midwest issue. the risk of buying used cars in the midwest is you dont want to buy a car with flood damage!! the midwest has rivers. rivers rise and flood towns!!! although, if the car runs good and can pass an inspection by a mechanic that YOU choose, then there should be no problem. you need to check for rust around your trunk and around your roof. you dont want stuff in your trunk getting ruined. you dont want rain leaking into your car. check for rust around the windshield. you dont want the windshield dropping out of the car. rust is a future problem, because as the guy who said its like a cancer, well, yeah, he's right. rust is actually worse than cancer. whereas a cancerous tumor might… [cont.]

Quarter panel damage: cost of repair?
Q. I am thinking of buying a car with a dent and some resulting rust from the damage on the quarter panel. It is located on the passengers side, at the bottom edge of the quarter panel near the seal of the door. The door works fine, I am just worried what the total cost of repair will not be worth it. I don't know anything about body work :( picture:

A. just to get that fixed and painted it will cost you anywhere from 5-800 bucks ,that quarter cab be fixed, but that's the least you,ll get by with on repairing it,if you decide on buying it make sure they knock a lot off the cost of the car, because your going to be without it for at least a week, and that's a big inconvenience, but the good thing is ,that it can be fixed,id think this one through real good before i bought it, it may not be worth fixing,it all depends on the price of the car, good luck with it.

There is a half-centimetre cut of damage in my rear bodypanel on my car. Will it rust ?
Q. It took a little damage, just a scrape on the rear arch, but in one part the scrape has cut through the bodywork/metal. In otherwords the cut is a tear/hole in the bodywork. Its very small cut and you have to look real close to see it. I'm not having it professionally repaired and am going to do priming/paint/lacquer work with friend... but is the cut something to worry about and if so how can i lessen chances of it rusting ? Thanks. Thanks Jamand and wildmanny2 for tech info. As for the repair work spraying... I've bought 100 of materials and done my research in that dept and hoping to make an ok-ish job of it. A. Just buy a tin of spray primer and spray some into a jar - with a little brush - put some paint into the deepest part of the scrape - that will stop any rust until you are ready to fix it properly

Can I repair rusty scratch in bath tub with VEZEL-PLAMUUR sealant?
Q. the bath tub is a plastic moulded unit. and the circular scratch, 1cm in diameter, is not yet a gaping hole but has begun to ooze thin layer of rust. i don't wish to replace the tub as it is not more than six years old. can i repair the damage and hide the ugly dot with VEZEL-PLAMUUR sealant, which is a fibre putty?
Asked by pahari girl - Fri Mar 2 21:23:17 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. tub can't be plastic if it is rusting. It is a steel tub with some coating on it. you need to neutralize the rust first. If the scratch is deep enough, fill it, otherwise buy some epoxy paint to touch up the scratch. Clean the area first. It is not a permanent fix, but then, nothing is.

Q. way to repair any damage and rust?
Asked by fudge76bd - Wed Aug 23 11:19:51 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on what you mean by rust! If the rust has come from the inside (ie you can stick a screwdriver through it) then the only real fix is to cut and weld in some new metal. If its just surface stuff then sand away ALL rust / skim with filler / shape up and prime local area / respray to the nearest body line to keep as small as possible (im thinking your probably going to using spray cans). lol sounds easy doesnt it :) BTW. forget using any so called rust treatment!, trust me! To be fair your better off giving it to someone who knows what they are doing. If you want to send me some pics i should be able to tell you how bad it is and give you a rough idea of what you should be paying to get sorted. from someone whos rubbed cars for… [cont.]

Whats a cheap way to repair damage to a car?
Q. My roommate was backing out of the drive way earlier and nicked my car. It is a beater (1996) with a bunch of battle scars already, so I figured there isn't much of a point in running it though insurance. But, just wondering what the best way is to treat it? I was thinking of waxing it to buff out as much as possible and then covering it with clear coat so it wouldn't rust. Is that the best way to go?

A. Just wax the damaged area and that will prevent rust for a while, then re-wax...Or just have the car crushed and don't worry about rust anymore...

Repairing a bleach damaged red polo shirt?
Q. I had a rust stain on a white / red polo shirt. I put bleach on the rust but the bleach spread & caused light red blotches on the originally dark red stripes. Is there anyway to repair this? It doesn't have to be perfect, just less obvious. Thanks

A. Buy yourself a permanent felt marker in red and touch up the spot with that. It's not perfect, but definitely will make the spot less obvious. I used to use a blue felt marker on my boys navy blue uniform pants when science class chemicals accidentally spilled on their clothes.

Truck; Repair or Replace?
Q. Okay. I bought the truck in Feb of this year, so I don't qualify for the cash for clunkers. I paid 3 grand for the truck. It ran good until June, then the intake gaskets needed to be replaced. $700 job. It ran great for about a month, then the engine block cracked. Now I have to swap out the engine. It'll cost $3,000. The truck is in relatively good condition, 4X4, new tires, clean chassis, and very little rust. Should I repair or replace? Also I won't be able get the truck worked on for about 3 months, that could potentially cause further damage. 1998 Chevrolet Silverado reg cab. 165K on truck. The cost of reman engine is $1600, and the cost of labor for long block engine replacement is $1404. I have a $700 dollar credit with the shop,… [cont.]
Asked by ira d - Tue Jul 28 14:12:34 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A cracked block has very little trade-in value as a "core". So the engine replacement cost should take that into consideration. If the engine is damaged more, it could further decrease the core value, but many rebuilders give zero trade-in credit for an unrebuildable engine block. You probably won't find a car in as good a shape with a brand new engine for $3000. All used cars will require maintenance or repairs sooner or later. If you like the truck enough to keep it for at least another two years, it would be worth it to replace the engine.

Damaged a friends car. The total value of the car is $150.Damage costs are $1000.Will it be a write off?
Q. I accidently backed into my friends car when it was parked in my drive way. I hit the back corner bumper and misplaced the bumper and left a dint in it. Now the problem is that I originally sold the car (that I hit) to my friend for $150.It is an old Datsun Stanza and in poor condition. He didnt spend too much getting it ready for rego. The quote for repairs is over $1000 because there is a huge amount of rust in the boot. If they try and bang out the dint the whole boot is likely to collapse. The car is so rusty I doubt it will pass rego this year. If it wasnt for the rust the quote would be much less. A. The Insurance company will want three quotes, and if the bill is bigger than the agreed value of the car then, yes, they will declare the vehicle a write off, Get some body filler and fix it yourself, won't cost that much.

Question about VW convertible?
Q. We have a 1969 convertible VW bug with a great deal of rust damage that my husband is trying to repair. A local lady contacted us that has a 1976 VW bug that she is offering for $200. We are hoping that someone can let us know if these have compatible parts, before we drive all the way to the place to see the condition/make sure it's all there. TIA.
Asked by Lone Wolf - Wed Mar 25 13:44:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. while there are interchangeable parts between these years there are not that many. without knowing what you need and the condition of the 1976 its hard to say whether its worth it or not. the side and rear glass is interchangeable, the front windshield is interchangeable if the 1976 is NOT a Super Beetle. if the 76 is a convertible then the tops are interchangeable. the doors are interchangeable, the hood(if the 76 is not a super beetle), the deck lid... the list goes on but again without knowing what the car has or what you want from it, its hard to say if its a good idea to buy it as a parts car.

Dishwasher rack repair? Is it even possible?
Q. My dishwasher rack has some damage due to the stoneware finish of my dishes - it has worn the plastic away in two or three spots - now it is starting to show rust. To replace the rack is over $300 (it is an unusual size apparently!) Is there a cheaper way to fix this? Is there such a thing as plastic spray that can withstand high temperatures? Thanks for any information.

A. They usually sell a liquid vinyl for doing touchup on DW racks in matching colors. It works but it doesn't last all that long. $300 sounds awful high unless it is foreign made, like a Bosch.

Q. I am not saying it was. But on the ITV news yesterday they showed all the damage to the ship before the fire and how it would cost millions to repair. Then it burns down and all the valuable non damaged bits and bits which were hard to replace were not on the ship. Only the rotting wood and rusting iron were there when it burned. All the masts, statues etc were all safe.

Help! How to repair/maintain rusty steel/concrete balcony?
Q. A couple years back, my condo hired someone to repair our concrete balconies. He put a steel trim around the concrete floor that was visible along the sides, but not from the top or bottom, where you'd only see concrete. I found out that he "sealed" the balconies with driveway paint. Fast forward a couple years later, you can see thin lines of rust through the concrete where the steel trim is located. My neighbors are still paying for the balcony work from two years ago (I bought afterward) and are very concerned about another large scale assessment. Is there anything we can do to stop the damage from processing? How can we maintain and protect our balconies? Thanks!
Asked by archlydia - Wed Jun 10 09:22:52 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That's a very serious problem there is not easy fix here, I know of buildings with the sort of problem condemned because the concrete cancer got so bad it was cheaper to rebuild. IMO unless everyone in your condo does a high end fix $$$ you best patch your balcony to hide the rust, sell up and run! P.S. I'm guessing that's what the people who sold you the apartment did, sold up and ran.
