A. What I would do in this situation is, first of all keep being friends with Mandy. Secondly, talk to Liz. Let her know you still do care, but her actions are hindering you from being the kind of friend she wants. Tell her you still love her, but she's gonna have be herself again. One thing that I've learned is that love is the strongest force in the world, and when it is stopped or blocked it hurts really bad. Good luck!

We have replaced several parts on out 1997 Jeep cherokee and it continues to cut off any suggestions?
Q. The jeep stalls out and sputters and then just cuts off. We have taken it to be placed on a diagnostic machine and it has said that the o2 sensor needed to be replaced and the TPS sensor as well. We have replaced all of these parts and it acts like it is fixed for a day or two and then we have the same problems again. We have also replaced the ignition coil and the fuel regulator, but we are still having the same problem.

A. Very easy! I have owned my Cherokee since new in 1995 and it is approaching 260,000 miles, so I have some experience tinkering with it. You have one of two possible failures. A) Crankshaft Position Sensor. Located at the top of the transmission bellhousing on the drivers side. A little trick to change, but doable by a semi-amatuer! B) Camshaft Position Sensor. Located inside the Distributor. Easy to change. Buy them both and carry a spare for the future under the back seat! Later, Bruce

What is involved in getting a brake caliper replaced?
Q. I've got a clicking sound when I press on the brakes. Repair shop says I need to replace a caliper. They say that the pads are still at 70% but they say that in addition to replacing the calipers, they need to replace the rotors and pads. I think that's baloney. Why do the other parts have to be replaced if they are in good shape?
Asked by J B - Wed Oct 29 14:15:13 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I replaced the all three of those on my jeep awhile back. First off the rotor. If you can get it off and take it to autozone they will be able to measure its thickness. If its thick enough you can get it machined for a small fraction of the cost of a new rotor. That is if it needs work at all. If there are ANY grooves in it it needs at a minimum to be machined. Second would be the break pads. They are cheap as sin. Like maybe $15-20 bucks for a set. Some manufacturers will also resurface them if you bring em back. Generally I would have them replaced if you're going through the trouble of taking the break system apart anyways, however I'm not sure if its a good idea to replace one and not the other. If the caliper is doing something… [cont.]

Can having my catalytic converter replaced lead to my car to start stalling?
Q. I recently (last week) had my catalytic converter replaced on my '03 Toyota Matrix and now its stalling when I reach higher speeds. It putters when idling and then when I start to reach around 40 it slows down but doesn't completely die just coasts in a real low speed. When I restart it, it seems ok until I start to go faster again. Could this have happened when the converter was replaced? My car ran fine before I had this work done!

A. Something does not adding up.Why you replaced cat?Because cat was bad.Why cat became bad?Because engine has tune up problems and raw fuel was introduced to exhaust system (incl. cat) for long period of time, basically burned up cat.Is that sound logical to you?To me ,that you're still got problems with tune up and on yours way to burn an other cat pretty soon.Check your tune up stuff first, then go and complaint about sloppy cat job.

How will I know when my catalytic converter needs to be replaced?
Q. Silly girly question probably, so please be patient lads! Part of my car's exhaust had to be replaced recently and the mechanic said that the cat would also need to be replaced in the next 4-6 months. How will I know when the work needs to be done? Is it going to suddenly go bang or shoot out clouds of smoke from the exhaust pipe? Also, my MOT is due in September - should I get the cat replaced before then?
Asked by Whoosher - Wed Aug 15 07:56:11 2007 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments

A. All that will happen is that the car emissions will be alot higher. If the Cat has gone it will fail an emissions test. you wont notice if it has broken yourself Catalytic converter rarely break unless there is a problem with the engine. It could be that the mechanic is just trying to make some money out of you Just put it through its mot and see what the results are

How much would it cost to get my sun gear shell replaced?
Q. After some research regarding some transmission problems that I've been experiencing in my '93 Maxima, I have come to the conclusion that my sun gear shell needs to be replaced. The part only cost 50 bucks but I don't have the time to replace it myself. I was just wondering how much I should expect to pay to have it replaced in a shop.
Asked by Mr. Fisher - Mon Jun 28 23:34:17 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This requires the entire transmission to be removed and disassembled. This would normally be done during a rebuild. You're not going to be able to do it yourself. You might as well have the transmission rebuilt at the same time. Figure about $2200. Or just get another transmission.

How can I tell if my brakes need to be replaced?
Q. I own a 2004 Pontiac Vibe. It is the base model and an automatic. I bought it used in February 2005 so I don't know when the brakes have been serviced last. Lately I've noticed that there is a squeeking noise when I brake. I don't want to take it to the shop because I don't want them to tell me that they need to be replaced ASAP when in reality it's not that bad. I'll start to slow down but the squeeking noise doesn't appear until right before I fully stop. It also makes a "thud" noise right when it's stopping. I have to press down on the brake pedal quite a bit before stopping. Do I get the whole ensemble replaced or just the pads? How can I tell what needs to be done without paying an arm and a leg? Is there anything I need to… [cont.]
Asked by jaycie685 - Sat Dec 30 04:01:15 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most likely the brake pads are worn to the point that the wear indicator is hitting the rotor thus causing a squeek. New pads may be all that is required to fix your brakes. Loaded calipers is not a bad way to go because sometimes recompressing old calipers just doesn't work out and the cost is not that much more. Loaded means that new pads are included. Having the rotors resurfaced is a good idea as it eliminates a break in period. New rotors do not cost that much more than resurfacing. A good shop will show you what is wrong if you ask them to. If they refuse to do this go somewhere else.

I replaced my kitchen countertop & now there are different size gaps between backsplash & countertop?
Q. When we replaced our old countertop we found that our old countertop was not level. We have a tile backsplash with a 2" tile chair/counter rail. On one end of the counter the gap between the chair/counter rail and the countertop is bigger than on the rest of the countertop. How can be correct this?
Asked by Pam C - Wed Oct 3 08:54:23 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If it's not too late to match the tile I would look for a tile filler strip to match. A piece that either resembles cove molding or quarter round should work well below your chair rail..If the "chair rail" is wood and not tile then the same would work. "Measure twice and cut once"

How can you tell if fiberglass attic insulation needs to be replaced?
Q. I had a contractor say that he needed to replace fiberglass batting with blown-in cellulose. A friend who is very knowledgeable went into the attic and said the fiberglass was still bright pink and did not appear to be compressed or damaged. He said that still being bright pink is a good sign that the insulation is still in great shape. I moved in 3 years ago and have no idea when the insulation was last replaced. Thanks!
Asked by Ico Jones - Mon Mar 3 10:57:28 2008 - - 7 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Insulation never has to be replaced unless it is compressed so far that it offers no R value and even then I would not replace it, just add more on top of it. The color has absolutely nothing to do with how old or good the insulation is. The color pink is just a dye. You should have a minimum of R-38 in a ceiling. It does not matter if it is fiberglass or blown in. Personally, I like to use fiberglass in case you have to access the ceiling for anything in the future such as wiring, etc. I ran R19 fiberglass with the ceiling joist (or trusses) and then ran another layer of R19 fiberglass perpendicular to it to overlap joints. Another note on the pink color. Owens Corning used the color as a marketing ploy but now they say their pink… [cont.]

How do you determine when a furnace filter needs to be replaced?
Q. I am investigating using the pleated filters in my furnace. The problem with any filter is knowing when to replace them. Most tell you how long they should be in the furnace before replacement. It seems to me a better method would be to measure the low pressure on the blower side of the filter. As the filter becomes plugged the pressure would go down while running. Does anyone know of a device to do this or does anyone know how I can determine what the maximum pressure drop should be across a filter when it needs to be replaced?
Asked by chuck_lieber - Thu Oct 23 17:31:51 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Filters are to be replaced at the least every other month. It really depends on the area you live in. The type of filter you use makes a difference also. If air cant travel through it due to the millions of dust bunnies and particles that have been trapped...then its time to change it. Be careful with the pleated filters. They come in different densities so be careful not to get one of those 1200 's which is very dense. True the higher the number the more particles it will catch. but at what price ? Try this : while the furnace is operating take note of the sound of the air movement. if when you remove the filter (if possible without having to leave the cover off) there's a significant release of air pressure, then the filter is too… [cont.]

How much would it cost to have the rotors replaced in a 2003 Mitshubishi Galant?
Q. My car is shaking while I break, especially from 40-50 mph. I think I narrowed it down to my rotors being warped. A. best to shop around you don't have to take the first offer rotors cost any where from $30 to as much as $200 (06 ford truck) cost is less if you buy your own parts but then the shop will not warranty parts if they go bad

How often should a fuel filter actually be replaced?
Q. I'm not really sure if a fuel filter is something you routinely replace, or only when you have problems. I have a '93 accord, I've put about 50K miles on it and never changed it, who knows when it was replaced last. I was also wondering, is there a way to check, and or clean it to figure if it actually needs replacing? The only reason I even wonder is because I seem to be getting an intermittent fuel delivery problem, it happens so infrequently that its hard to diagnose, but once it stalled, every once in a while it wants to crank about 15 times before starting, and sometimes (maybe once or twice a week, usually the same day), I'd be driving and the engine would suddenly cut out real quick, just enough to give a good jerk. A. Some how I doubt that the fuel filter is causing that. But they are cheap enough, I think. Just change it and see what happens. If the fuel filter were clogged enough to starve the engine why would it ever start again? If it were restricted enough where the engine used just a little more than could pass through, then it would stop frequently. If you are convinced that it is fuel starvation, then I would guess there is debris in your fuel tank. I think the fuel pump and filter are located back there anyway. I think I would run the tank down to a couple gallons and pull the pump and filter. Be sure to have a container large enough to catch the amount of fuel in the tank. Flush the tank with fresh gasoline and if you find no debris,… [cont.]

How much would it cost to have a clutch replaced and a window repaired for a 1994 Geo Prizm?
Q. I need to know how much a clutch replacement might cost and the cost of a window repair. The window does not roll up. We have to wedge something in between the glass and the door to make it stay otherwise it will fall down. And, the driver's side door knob is broken. How much would it cost to have the knob replaced?
Asked by H - Fri Oct 9 15:14:10 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Fixing window should be half an hour job. If you are technical minded, its quite easy to fix window, you only need a couple of screw drivers to fix it. Clutch can be 3 to 4 hours of a job. I don't know the rates in USA, but garages here in Europe are 60 euros per hour on average. So around 4.5 hours @ 60 euros (or 70 USD)... roughly 300 to 350 USD for work. And a replacement clutch is over 100 bucks usually.
