What tools will I need to replace the filler valve mechanism in my toilet?
Q. I'm borrowing some tools, and the instructions are not with me. I'd like to know what tools I need to replace that filler and valve mechanism in my toilet. Thanks so much.

A. A pair of slip-joint ChannelLocks that will open to at least 1 1/2" (one-and-a-half-inches) to remove the water line from under the toilet AFTER you turn off the water at the shutoff valve (also called the 'angle stop') on the wall and to remove the bigger nylon nut under the toilet that holds the fill valve in place. And a knife to cut the little black overflow-tube hose. Have a bucket and rags handy. When installing the new fill valve, get everything hand-tight, then use the ChannelLocks to tighten it a little bit more. Reattach the water supply line to the toilet, turn the wall valve on SLOWLY and then flush the toilet after it fills, checking for function and for leaks. I like Fluidmaster 400 fill valves...straightforward, easy to… [cont.]

Q. I dont have the money to buy this tool, what other tools could i use?
Asked by James H - Sat May 3 02:55:19 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. all are great tricks. Save the screw driver one for last though.. I have done it ALOT of times but todays oil filters aint what they use to be.. You might end up just ripping the metal shell apart seeing how weak and thin most are now days. Man's leather belt that has one finished side and one still rough leather side (rough side around filter) Large slip joint pilers a strap of rubber, an old pulley belt Then if all eles fails drive a screw driver all the way through both sides of filter with a hammer and un screw by grabbing screw driver

What kind of tools do I need to make beads from granite?
Q. I have loads of granite scraps at my work and would love to make beads for jewelry. What type of cutting & polishing tools would I need to work with and where would I get them? Are there any online sites that carry tools to create beads?
Asked by redslippers - Wed Nov 15 13:27:39 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most bead tool sites on the web cater to people who make glass beads but a rock tumbler, a Dremel Rotary tool, a small vise and lots of patience will get you started. Just be warned in advance-the smaller the beads the more work it will take. Have fun! from a stone sculptor!

A. You could make a hammer with a branch, vines, and a rock. You could make a knife with a broken rock. Most importantly, you can make fire with two sticks (yes, you really can if you know what you're doing) and that's the most important tool of all.

What tools would be appropriate to carve a piece of obsidian jewelry?
Q. I would prefer "the correct" tools, but basically I am just interested in some advice on what I could use to: 1) chisel it into the rough shape (a fleur-de-lis). 2) finely round and smooth it. 3) polish it. Also, if you have any advice (I expect that obsidian is rather fragile)... I have large quantities so trial and error is definitely an option as I learn.
Asked by bashfulmonkey - Thu Oct 11 20:43:16 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The basic tools to use are those used for making cabochons. Such as several thicknesses of dopping sticks dowels about 3-5 inches long and Green Wax to hold the item on the stick. (heat the wax until it becomes very soft and put a dollop on the stick you choose. To break bond pu it into the freezer and it will become brittle. Save the pieces because it is reusable. You will also need a grinding wheel to shape the stone. Find a local artisan that makes stone jewelry and he/she can set you up. Usually, at craft fairs. Do not chisel it because it is a form of glass. Grinding and polishing is the way to go. The medium to use aluminum oxide. Finish the piece with red, gray or yellow rouge that all come in thick sticks and are graded for grit.. [cont.]

What tools do you use to glitter your craft projects?
Q. I use a brush to clean, a spoon to sprinkle, and a lint tape roll to gather excess. What other tools can I use to make my glittering life easier?

A. instead of using a spoon try a cheap salt or pepper shaker, it will hold more glitter than a spoon and it will help keep it off your hands. Also try getting a towel or a sheet to put under your projects so it won't get all over the table and floor

What would you put in his new workshop for tools? Thanks to all in advance! 3 great answers! Thank you everyone... I'll do the workbench, the lighting, the shop vac, and then price out the rest of the items on the first answer list and give him a gift card to get them. Wonderful, thank you everyone!

A. Two ways to shop for tools. One is to buy from newspapers, Craig's List, etc... Another way would be to shop at a major retail store such as Sears or Lowes. They will honor any return if he doesn't like them. Here could be the start of a basic set of tools: A workbench and a light over it. Socket sets. SAE and Metric. Auto electrical tools like a timer, voltage meter, etc... Shop Vac Screwdrivers Wrenches. Get him the ratcheting kind. Vise grips, pliers Alan wrenches Compressor. Capable of 100 lbs. Air tools. Congratulations and good luck!

What tools are needed to change the rear brake caliper on a 1990 honda prelude?

Asked by equestrian423 - Tue Jun 9 12:06:18 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not familiar with a 90 prelude per se, but, assuming you are going to *change the caliper* and that you dont mean change the pads or rotor, here's what *I* would bring. 1) A set of hex wrenches The caliper is attached with two hex bolts. Unbolt them, and off it comes. That simple. 2) A hammer. Because its not always THAT simple. Tap the caliper, it might be stuck if the pads are worn down, crudded up, or stuck to the rotor. 3) Small wrenches. LIke 1/4" or so. The brake line fastens to the caliper with a smll fitting that screws into the caliper body. Unscrew it, and detach the brake line. It will leak. 4) A 6" c-clamp. I dont know why you need this if you are installing a NEW caliper, but bring it anyway. I use this to push… [cont.]

What tools were used for sculpture during the Italian Renaissance?
Q. When artists would make sculptures how would they make them look so real? What type of special tools?
Asked by Brooke - Thu Apr 23 19:37:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The same sculpture tools that are used now and were used in the times of the Greeks and Romans, and by masons doing decorations on old churches and cathedrals. You need to google 'sculpture tools' and get a list, and the curators of sculpture at the British Museum or V&A would probably have information or links for you. The making of an object to be real would be 'skill'. Some people have it naturally or develop it, and some don't (I tried sculpture at Camberwell School of Art and failed miserably).

Q. What kind of materials and tools do I need to grow a cucumber? Shovels?

A. you dont need any tools to grow cucumbers i grow mine in pots, and very successfully too plant seeds, and water its as simple as that not growing or planting season here just now though dont know about where you are once the plant is growing, about 10" you need to support them as they grow quite tall and have heavy fruits, but i just plant them against a fence and tie them onto that, they are not difficult to grow, you can plant in the ground and you would need to dig over the soil, but again, simple too do, if you dont have a pot to plant in and want to plant in the ground, borrow a shovel expensive to buy just to plant cucumbers

What supplies/tools will I need to make a simple glass bead necklace and bracelet?
Q. I am interested in making my own glass bead jewelry, but I have no idea where to start or what to do. A. when I wanted to start a few months ago I went to the craft store and bought a cheap beginner kit. It has what you need to make just practice pieces, once you get familiar then you can start spending the money on the glass beads that are available. I personally switched to crystal once I got the hang of it. Super easy and fun to do. I believe the beginner kit will also come with your basic tools. Good Luck

A. Sean is right on the money, however you will need a skill saw to make rip, and cross cuts. A jig saw to cut around door jambs, and other obstacles. Some masking tape over the pergo before you cut it, will make it easier to mark, and reduce chipping on the cut edge. It really is easy.

A. A sawzall, or reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade, or else a 4 1/2" grinder with a metal cutting blade. Mark both sides before cutting. Cut one side at a time, not the whole door at once.

What kitchen or food-preparation tools have helped you to eat healthier at home?
Q. I asked this question a minute ago, I think in the wrong forum since I didn't get any good answers. I've found a couple tools that just make a big difference for me if I eat something healthy at home or else eat out or eat something unhealthy at home. Their ease of use and cleaning have made them top tools in my ability to eat healthier. Are there any ones that are just great for you to eat healthy, fresh foods at home? Answering my own question, here's what I like (despite what people said in the last question, this is not an ad!): For me, I love this chopper thing. The reviews on Amazon say that a lot of people's broke, but I've been using mine regularly for maybe 6 months now. I love it! It's so easy to chop on tomatoes and onions… [cont.]
