Is it possible to have a washer hookup to the sink? Is there a part?
Q. I am getting a stackable washer and dryer... The dryer is electric which is perfect, but the washer needs to be hooked up to the sink. I know that there are washers that do that, but can i find a part that will make that possible? Where?
Asked by Cassie P - Fri Jul 6 16:40:50 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The washer needs a standing drain (about the height of the washer) and it also needs to be vented at the top. Hooking into a regular drain could cause problems. Have some one who's done this before to help you. By the way my stackable is made by Whirlpool (front loading Duet), I've had problems with it. It took 2 weeks just to get parts to fix it.

What is the best washer and dryer available? Does anyone have a subscription to consumer reports?
Q. Our washer just pooped out on us and we were thinking about getting a new set of stackable washer and dryer. I was just wondering what the best bang for your buck was. I don't want to spend the money on a subscription of consumer reports!

A. Do you mean in performance or durability? In general, top loading Kenmores or Whirpool machines are the most durable and their performance is quite satisfactory. This is based on Consumer Reports latest test and data. If you don't want to subscribe to Consumer Reports, you can go to the local library and they will have a copy of all of the recent Consumer Reports.

How do I remove the washer fom my shower head?
Q. I've heard that many people now hack their showers or customize them, to increase water-flow. I know that you can take your shower head down, pull the washer out with a screwdriver, and remove the offending intrusion that is restricting water flow. BUT - I can't find anything to remove? what am I looking for exactly? Is the washer the black rubber circle where you screw the pieces together?
Asked by Otonita - Wed Nov 15 14:32:16 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, you don't want to remove the washer and, yes that's that round black thing, made out of rubber. Your shower will leak all over the place, you won't be happy. What you want to do, or should do if you can do it. I just did it to my kitchen faucet. It's the way they use to "save water" by retarding it, by putting in the center the plastic, with holes in it, restricting the water flow. What you want to do is drill out this little plastic restrictor, I used a sharp knife, I don't know how heavy your is. Have your boyfriend, or some other person do it. It's not hard, it may be tough. You'll need two wrenches or big pliers to take the shower head off.

Can a washer/dryer that needs a 15-20amp 120volt outlet be plugged into a 13amp 125volt extension cord?
Q. I have a new washer and dryer that can't reach the actual outlet because the cords are too short. Can I use the extension cord that I have or should I get a new one? By the way, I've had a ton of extension cord fires lately, so it would be really nice to know if I should use this one or not. Thanks.

How to lock a washer and dryer from other people using them? Any ideas?
Q. I have a washer and dryer downstairs in my apartment basement. There have been several occasions where other tenants who do not have appliances of there own use other peoples appliances without there permission and we have been getting sky rocket utility bills. Not only that but they have cockaroaches on top of that...I need advice on how to lock these appliances so that other people will not use them. Any handy suggestions?

A. There are many types of hardware available to lock up your appliances knowing how to mount them without damaging the appliances is another factor that can only me determined by actually seeing your washer and dryer. basically, you don't want to drill through and electrical line or components inside the appliance to mount the hardware. The only other alternative to mounting flush locking hardware is the use of an epoxy cement or a product called Lexel that most major hardware stores sell. Lexel will bond anything to anything. I've seen 2 coke bottles glued together with Lexel top to top that were impossible to pull apart without breaking the bottles. Ask your local hardware store for advice on flush mount locking hasps you can glue on on… [cont.]

A. This happened to my Washer last year. I figured since it was about seven years old, I just needed a new one. However, being curious about how things work, I decided since I had the washer away from the wall, I was going to figure out how the washer actually works (and what it looks like under it). I found a small plastic piece that had broken (I do not remember what it was called), so I called SEARS repair (it is a Sears Washer). They told me the name of the part and they break over time (mainly from putting too heavy of a load in the washer ~ they break to protect other parts). I went to SEARS repair, purchased the part for $13, installed it myself, and rest is history - Washer is spinning, pumping the water out, etc and still works… [cont.]

Which pressure washer should I buy to use around the yard?
Q. I've looked at a few websites and see that I can get gas powered washers for upwards of $400 and also get small electric ones for as low as $80. I understand that the big difference seems to be the pressure that each puts out (PSI) but that's all I understand. Can I get a compressor so I can say attach a paint sprayer, a tire inflator and then attach a head so I can pressure wash? Or do I have to get a compressor for paint and air and then a pressure washer as well? I'm mostly interested in the washing part but would be nice to have an all in one solution if that is even available? Here is what I want to do...wash the cars, RV, kids bikes, driveway, vinyl siding on the house and basic yardwork type of chores. Please help me figure out… [cont.]

A. If it were me... I'd go to the local rental equipment shop and ask the guy in charge of what he thinks. Why - because he would be the one very familiar with what you'd be looking for. As that's what he rents, and is very knowledgeable about.

how do I clean my washer machine?
Q. My husband does treework and I've noticed after washing all his clathes, my white clothe comes out more dirty than it was before! like there is some pine sap or dirt in the machine. I end up spending money in stain remover, detergent and washing my clothes twice!!! not mention my nice clothes get ruined after so many washes. Please tell me how to clean my washer machine and what detergent is the best for dirt and "tree glue" thanks!

A. Get a green scrubber (ScothBrite) pad and some white vinegar; scrub the inside of the washer's basket, all the way up the sides, the agitator, etc., as well as the inside of the lid; rinse well, then run the machine, with a little detergent in it but otherwise empty, then wipe it afterwards with a clean cloth. Repeat after each washing of his clothes (washed separately from yours, of course).Use a LITTLE SimpleGreen or ZEP CitrusCleaner as a pre-wash spot remover on his clothes, then scrub the spots and rinse them in a laundry tub/sink before putting them in your washing machine. Consider doing his clothes in a laundromat or hook him up with a Uniform Service.

Can I put a stackable washer/dryer unit in the same space that the washer is currently in?
Q. I will be moving into a new place soon and they have the washer sitting in the kitchen over near the corner of the room near the sink. Can I take that out and put a stackable in the same space? Does it matter whether the unit is electric or gas? I think the current washer is gas. The seller use to have the dryer in the garage and village made them take it out it is against code. I have a closet that I was going to put the stackable in but heard that can be very exp(due to there not being any hookups in the closet).. so I said well maybe put the stackable in the same space the washer is currently sitting in to save $$$ I also wonder how the venting/dryer goes with these.
Asked by scarletjazz - Sat Apr 21 09:27:31 2007 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Most of the stack-able ones that are available are small units that were intended for an apartment. They will usually be electric because you will typically only find electric in apartments. I think they are usually 110 volt so going from gas to electric is a lot easier than going from electric to gas as you probably already have an outlet available anyway. My biggest concern is if a stack-able unit will have enough capacity for you. If you are only doing laundry for one, or two it should be enough. If you are washing for a family you should buy something bigger. I missed that, the other answerer is right your washer definitely is not gas, but your current dryer may be.

second floor clothes washer is vibrating so much that it loosens drywall tape, how do i fix this?
Q. basically the washer vibration is so bad that the drywall is affected and the light bulbs in the garage below have to be replaced once a month due to the vibration. the washer isn't shaking just vibrating. how can i reduce this significantly?
Asked by Eric J - Tue Apr 29 16:19:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First make sure is is level. If it isn't, almost all new washers have feet on the corners that are adjustable. Leveling it will significantly reduce the amount of vibration during the spin cycle! If it isn't level, no amount of trying to adjust the clothes inside will help. Also try and make sure your loads aren't too big for the size of washer. Good luck :)

I just got a front-loading high efficiency washer. Do I now need to use a special detergent?
Q. Tide has a brand that is especially designed for these washers, but it is more expensive. The manual does not specifically recommend any one type of detergent, but I've been told you have to use these special detergents in order for the washer to run optimally.

A. You can use regular detergent but use only a third of the amount called for. And be sure to run a cycle with plain vinegar once a month to prevent soap buildup.

A. Is this one of the new front-loading washing machines? Check the manual, you may need an HE (high efficiency) detergent. There's less sudsing to those soaps since there's less water being used in those machines.

A. could be the connection from the connection box to the tub or the tub itself could be leaking if your sure its not the hose...did you pull the back off and make sure where the bottom of the hose connects to the connection box isnt leaking take the back off and run the machine and see if you can tell where the water is coming from...just dont touch anything back there while its running...just look with a flashlight so you dont come in contact with any wiring B.

How effective are portable washer and dryers?
Q. Me and my boyfriend are moving into a new apartment that doesn't have washer/dryer hookups. I don't want to use the apartment laundry mat---been there, done that and hated it. I was looking into portable washer and dryers and wanted to know more from people who have experience with them. Thanks.

A. They are very good for this situation. The only down is that you have to pull them in and out to hook them up. These units are 100% better than going to a laundrymat and alot cheaper over all. The way fuel prices are, you would save that in gas. Sears has Some realy good portable Kenmores. Good Luck
