What is the correct way to use a washer?
Q. I have a friend who insist that you should not pour the detergent in the washer before adding the clothes (like my washer directions say). She says some of it will seep down in the holes. She says you should start the washer, let the water build up, then add the detergent. Does anybody know exactly how a washer works in relation to this so I can determine if this is true or not?

A. An automatic washer consists of a water tight tank within which is a centfifuge drum that has lots of little holes in it. When you fill it up with water, the little holes have nothing to do with anything. The little holes are only useful during spin cycle when the machine is centrifuging the washwater and/or rinsewater out of the clothes. It really doesn't matter whether the detergent seeps down into the holes or not, since it will still all remain in the water tight tank. however, your friend's strategy is correct when adding Chlorine Bleach. It will fry your clothes unless you add it only after the water level has built up and can dilute it to non-frying concentrations.

Why is the water from my washer bubbling up out of the kitchen sink?
Q. The other morning I noticed a large puddle of water coming out from under my washer. This puddle appeared after I heard a gurgling sound. Last night I was in the kitchen washing the dishes and was running the washer at the same time, when the wash cycle turned over to the rinse cycle and the water was draining from my washer, it began to bubble up out of my kitchen sink! And it was dirty water too...it looked like stuff was floating in it, like the pipes are dirty inside. Why did this happen? It happened again this morning, that when the wash cycle turns over into the rinse, and the rinse cycle turns over into spin cycle, the water bubbles up out of the kitchen sink. The laundry room is inside the bathroom, which is right next to the… [cont.]

A. You definitely have a partial stoppage downstream. Look outside below the kitchen sink. You should have a clean out (a pipe protruding from the wall with a remove-able cap). This is where you would use a "snake" to get to the obstruction. You can purchase one for about $15 at your local hardware store. The problem with using acids and chemicals, is what they do to your pipes. Sometimes the stoppage is so bad, that no matter how much acid you pour down the drain, nothing happens. Now you or a plumber have to deal with this concentrated acid, while you are trying the more conventional method with a snake. Since you say the water is coming up in the kitchen sink, the stoppage is a grease clog. No matter how good you wipe off your… [cont.]

What could cause a washer to not drain and spin during the rinse drain cycle?

A. This happened to my Washer last year. I figured since it was about seven years old, I just needed a new one. However, being curious about how things work, I decided since I had the washer away from the wall, I was going to figure out how the washer actually works (and what it looks like under it). I found a small plastic piece that had broken (I do not remember what it was called), so I called SEARS repair (it is a Sears Washer). They told me the name of the part and they break over time (mainly from putting too heavy of a load in the washer ~ they break to protect other parts). I went to SEARS repair, purchased the part for $13, installed it myself, and rest is history - Washer is spinning, pumping the water out, etc and still works… [cont.]

second floor clothes washer is vibrating so much that it loosens drywall tape, how do i fix this?
Q. basically the washer vibration is so bad that the drywall is affected and the light bulbs in the garage below have to be replaced once a month due to the vibration. the washer isn't shaking just vibrating. how can i reduce this significantly?
Asked by Eric J - Tue Apr 29 16:19:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First make sure is is level. If it isn't, almost all new washers have feet on the corners that are adjustable. Leveling it will significantly reduce the amount of vibration during the spin cycle! If it isn't level, no amount of trying to adjust the clothes inside will help. Also try and make sure your loads aren't too big for the size of washer. Good luck :)

How can i stop my Car Washer Pump from freezing solid in the winter?
Q. At the moment i have the problem of the Washer pump on my 206 freezing solid is there anything i can add to the water mix to stop it from freezing, idealy something that can be found around the house. Common sense would dictate that standard table salt would be a big no no so what else could i use? Someone suggest washing up liquid? The washer mix isn't mixed with accurate quantities but i put a considerably large amount of washer fluid to water.

Can I clean my washer by running a cycle with just vinegar and water.?
Q. Towels are my biggest problem but I've experienced this with blankets and jeans on occasion. After doing wash, they come out of the washer smelling clean but after being folded and put away for a few days or more they start smelling mildewy. I have changed my detergeant/fabric softer and have moved to a new home(coming from well water to city water) and nothing changes. My washer was down for repair for a while and I was using a washer/dryer economy combo, the problem went away. Now that I have my washer back the problem is back. So I have concluded it is the washer creating the issue. What do I do?

A. Your washing machine should come with a guide telling you how to wash it. Vinegar is basically a harmless clenser so I dont see how it could hurt. Also, I work at a daycare. Once it hits summer, the sink drains smell aweful... like mildew or even like old broccoli sometimes. We pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drains...and the drains smell fresher for weeks! (Baking soda is also another basically harmless clenser...) They say that you can add 1/2 cup of baking soda to a load of clothes. Its supposed to keep them fresher longer ... and who knows...maybe it'll clean out the washer while its cleaning your clothes. ...Though my washing machine is newer and does not smell like mildew yet(I'm sure at one point it'll… [cont.]

A. Check out the LG Electronics WM3431 Front Load All-in-One Washer / Dryer. It is a single unit which works on 110 electricity. I'm assuming you don't have 220 available in your apartment as well.

Why do my clothes get pink stains in the washer?
Q. Most of my clothes, especially whites, get pink stains everytime after a wash. It has ruined many of my husband's T-shirts and mine as well and I almost resorted to throwing them out. We moved into the apartment 6 months ago and the washer-dryer is there already. Even my coloured clothes have problems. My husband thinks it's my washing technique that caused this problem, but I never had this problem when I used an older model before moving to this new place. Can someone please tell me what is wrong? We are contemplating to get a new washer.

A. It may actually be the water that is staining the clothing. We had a problem years ago with the water having to much iron in it and had to get tablets to put in the water filter to help eliminate this problem. I would ask your landlord about the machine as well considering it could be a number of things...oh and tell your husband to do the laundry to see if it your technique that is damaging the clothing...I am sure he will get the same result you did.

A. You can put a washer just about anywhere there is some drain for the machine. It doesn't have to be one of those drain pipes specifically made for a washing machine drain. I had a house once that had the washing machine drain go into a free-standing wash sink. One thing, though: you have to have the drain hose discharge above the level of the wash tub. Otherwise, whenever the machine fills the tub, it will just drain out the drain hose. You also won't have a hot water supply. So, every wash cycle will be cold wash - cold rinse. The dryer is another story. If it's electric, it requires a 220-volt outlet. If it's gas, it operates on 110 volts. But, you need to have a natural gas supply. There's also no vent. So, you'll fill the room with… [cont.]

How do I remove the washer fom my shower head?
Q. I've heard that many people now hack their showers or customize them, to increase water-flow. I know that you can take your shower head down, pull the washer out with a screwdriver, and remove the offending intrusion that is restricting water flow. BUT - I can't find anything to remove? what am I looking for exactly? Is the washer the black rubber circle where you screw the pieces together?
Asked by Otonita - Wed Nov 15 14:32:16 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First, you don't want to remove the washer and, yes that's that round black thing, made out of rubber. Your shower will leak all over the place, you won't be happy. What you want to do, or should do if you can do it. I just did it to my kitchen faucet. It's the way they use to "save water" by retarding it, by putting in the center the plastic, with holes in it, restricting the water flow. What you want to do is drill out this little plastic restrictor, I used a sharp knife, I don't know how heavy your is. Have your boyfriend, or some other person do it. It's not hard, it may be tough. You'll need two wrenches or big pliers to take the shower head off.

Q. I am installing a new bottom bracket on my road bike. I have everything disassembled, except I cannot get the lock washer on the chain side off. The ring on the other side could be taken off with a bottom bracket tool, but this washer is just a circle with two flat sides. Any tips?

A. Are you turning it the correct way? It has a left hand thread and it will be VERY tight.. If you are having trouble getting a tool to fit on it you may have to get the correct wrench to remove bb cups... they are readily available, but you can usually make do with a big adjustable wrench (NOT vise grips or channel locks)

A. For the dryer, you can vacuum the vent that flows to the outside, besides everything else you are doing. Not sure how old your washer and dryer are, but it might be time to get some new ones. They don't last a long time like they used to!

How much does it cost to have washer and dryer connections installed in a townhouse?
Q. I was curious because we are trying to buy a townhouse but they do not have washer and dryer connections. Who do you call to have the connections installed and how much does the process cost?

A. Well, first you will need a plumber, to install waste, vent and cold and hot water, for the washer. Then you will need gas, and a vent for the dryer. Both appliances will need electricity, so you need an electrician. Then you will need a sheet rocker, to close up the walls. All of the workers will need permits to perform the work legally, in order for inspections to be made, to ensure proper installation, according to code. Then you could paint it yourself, to save a little money. I would guess about $2000-$5000, depending on where the room is, and how the pipes are going to go. If this is on the ground floor, and concrete needs to be broken, to put the pipes in the ground, figure even more money for concrete removal, and… [cont.]

My washer makes a loud screeching noise on the cold cycle. Does anyone know what this could be?
Q. The washer is a Maytag and it's 7 years old. Other than the noise on the cold cycle, there's nothing wrong. The noise is only there when the water is going into the washer, so I'm not sure if the problem is with the washer or with the water line. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A. Mark C has the correct answer..unattach the cold water supply hose(turn water off first)..and inside the fitting where the water hose screws into the washer has a screenin it..or inaside the washer connection..It is blocked up with minerals in the water..soak in vinegar and clean..You might check both ends for some washer hoses have a screen built into the hose on both ends..Here is a great picture showing a blocked up screen! Will washing clothing in a regular washer/dryer remove small amounts of arsenic from it?
Q. Such as amounts you might acquire from sitting down on an arsenic contaminated deck or porch. Will simply running the clothing through a washer and dryer successfully remove all of the arsenic, or will that just distribute it to everything else in the washer? Should the clothing just be thrown out?

A. just wash them normally - many things have small amounts of arsenic dont stress about treated timbers ou probably need to chew on it to be affected

Is a stack washer and dryer worth it?
Q. We are buying a house and need to get a washer & dryer. Are stacks as big as regular ones inside? Can they do a larger load of laundry? I can look at them online, and have, but I want some personal opinions on them. We have enough room for regular, but want to save some room if we can.

A. We built an apartment on the house for my mother and installed Kenmore stacked "Duet Sport" washer and dryer ... front load washer. I love it, my mom hates it (bending to remove things from the washer, but likes not bending to remove things from the dryer). My mom's washer definitely has as much capacity as my very very old Kenmore large capacity washer. With the front load washer in the stacked arrangement, I like the High Efficiency features and it certainly has a huge variety of settings and cycles. In fact, I can't wait for my very old Kenmore to die so I can get a new washer like my mom's. P.S. when you lose the "folding space" on top of the appliances, you also lose the temptation for the top of the dryer to become a permanent… [cont.]
